Kit on the shore · Phone in the water
Dry Bags for Swimming
When you go swimming, you need to keep two lots of things dry: the kit you leave on the shore, and the valuables you take into the water.
On the shore: a 20 litre dry bag holds a towel and a change of clothes. If you bring a changing robe, go for 30 litres.
In the water: put your phone, car keys, cards and cash in a waterproof pouch, then put the pouch inside a tow float. It clips to your waist and helps boats and jet skis see you. For a relaxed holiday swim, the pouch on its own is fine.
Two jobs, two different bags
Most swimmers try to make one bag do everything and end up with a damp towel or a phone they daren't take in the water. It is simpler to split it: one bag for what stays on the shore, and something made to go in the water with you.
On the shore: 20 litres or 30 litres
Towel, dry clothes and a flask. 20 litres is our first pick, 30 litres if your changing robe comes too. Your car keys come in the water with you.
In the water: case inside a float
Phone, car keys, cards and cash in a pouch, then the pouch inside the tow float behind you. Not round your neck, where it bounces and drags.
On holiday: a pouch
For a paddle and a play in the sea, a pouch is all you need for a phone and some cash, and you can swim with it on. The float is better for longer swims.

Worth knowing before you choose
- A pouch works fine for swims, but a float is better for longer, serious swims. You can swim with a pouch for longer, but for anything over half an hour we would put the phone in its case inside a tow float. It is more comfortable, and since every time in the water carries some risk, the float keeps that risk to a minimum.
- A tow float is not a safety aid. It makes you visible and keeps your things dry. There is usually enough air in it to take a breather, but it mustn't be relied on to keep you afloat, so always swim within your limits. Read the tow float guide.
- A 10 litre works if you pack light. With a microfibre towel there is room for a change of clothes too. It is just not our first pick: a 20 litre takes a normal towel with room to spare.
