A waterproof cycling backpack is a roll-top dry bag with proper shoulder straps: instead of a zip and a rain cover that gives up in a downpour, the top rolls down and seals, so your work clothes and laptop stay dry however long the ride home takes.
“Water-resistant” is not the same as waterproof
Most commuter rucksacks are water-resistant with a rain cover in a pocket. That is fine for a shower. It is not fine for forty minutes of British rain, because the cover leaves the back panel against your spine exposed, the zips wick water in, and at speed it flaps loose. A roll-top has no zip into the main compartment at all.
It seals
Fold the top over at least three times and clip it. Rated 100% waterproof — the 30 litre is fully submersible, not merely rain-proof.
It survives
Tear, rip and puncture proof. These are the bags International Search and Rescue crews carry, which is a harder test than a commute.

What a dry bag is not
We would rather you bought the right thing than the wrong thing from us. A roll-top dry bag is superb at keeping water out and not much else, so before you order:
- There is no padded laptop sleeve — put your laptop in a padded sleeve first, then in the bag.
- There are no reflective strips. Bright orange and yellow help in daylight, but use lights after dark.
- It is not a pannier — there is no rack mount, it goes on your back.
- There is no external water-bottle pocket below 35 litres.
