Morocco Earthquake — September 2023

On the night of 8 September 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Within hours, the UK Government deployed the UK ISAR team to support the Moroccan rescue effort.

The deployment included:

• 62 specialist rescuers from 14 UK fire and rescue services
• 4 search and rescue dogs
• UK Emergency Medical Team (USAR Medical Team)
• Specialist equipment including seismic listening devices, concrete cutting and breaking tools, and propping and shoring equipment
• Transported via two Royal Air Force A400M aircraft

The team conducted search and rescue operations across remote areas of the Atlas Mountains, working tirelessly in extreme heat and difficult terrain to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
