A Parent’s Guide to the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition — Kit, Costs, and What to Expect
28 March 2026
Your child has signed up for the Duke of Edinburgh Award — brilliant! But now comes the kit list. Wondering what does my child need for DofE? This guide covers everything parents need to know, from what the expedition actually involves to the gear that will keep your child safe, dry, and comfortable.
What Is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The DofE is a youth achievement programme open to anyone aged 14–24. It has three levels — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — and each involves four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and the one that brings most parents to this page — the Expedition.
The expedition involves your child navigating a route through the countryside on foot (or sometimes by canoe or bike), camping overnight, and working as a team. It’s a genuinely brilliant experience — but it does require proper kit.
What Level Is Your Child Doing?
The kit requirements are similar across all levels, but the duration increases:
- Bronze (Year 9+) — 2 days, 1 night. A practice expedition followed by an assessed expedition.
- Silver (Year 10+) — 3 days, 2 nights. Longer distances and more self-sufficiency required.
- Gold (Year 12+) — 4 days, 3 nights. Often in wilder, more remote terrain.
Whatever the level, the biggest risk to your child’s comfort (and morale) is wet kit. A soaked sleeping bag on a cold night isn’t just miserable — it can be a genuine safety concern.
The Most Important Piece of Kit: A Waterproof Bag

Most kit lists suggest a rucksack with a rain cover. The problem? Rain covers blow off in the wind, let water in through the base, and don’t protect against sustained heavy rain or river crossings. We’ve seen too many DofE participants arrive at camp with soaked gear because a rain cover simply wasn’t enough.
A 100% waterproof backpack eliminates this problem entirely. No rain cover needed. No liner bags. No crossed fingers. Everything stays dry, guaranteed.
We recommend two options:
- 35L Waterproof Backpack (£38.99) — Our most popular DofE bag. Perfect for Bronze and Silver, and suitable for Gold if your child packs efficiently. Padded straps, roll-top closure, tough and lightweight.
- 55L Waterproof Backpack (£45.99) — More room for Gold expeditions or if your child is carrying group kit like a tent or cooking equipment.
Bonus tip: Add a 5L dry bag (£13.99) inside the main bag for wet or dirty kit — muddy boots, damp socks, or a wet towel. It keeps everything else clean and dry. Expedition leaders love this trick.
Can I Trust These Bags?
Yes. Ultra Dry Adventurer bags are trusted by International Search and Rescue (ISAR) teams who use them in extreme conditions worldwide. If they’re good enough for life-saving operations, they’ll handle a wet weekend on Dartmoor.
Every bag comes with a 5-Year Guarantee — so your child can use the same bag for Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
What Else Does My Child Need?
For a complete DofE expedition kit list, we’ve put together a complete DofE packing list covering everything from clothing and cooking gear to navigation and safety equipment. It includes tips on how to pack a roll-top waterproof bag for maximum efficiency.
Things Parents Often Forget
- Break in the boots — New walking boots cause blisters. Your child should wear them on at least 3–4 long walks before the expedition.
- No cotton — Cotton absorbs water and takes forever to dry. Base layers and socks should be synthetic or merino wool.
- No jeans — They’re heavy, restrictive, and miserable when wet. Walking trousers or leggings are essential.
- Practice packing — Your child should pack and unpack their bag at least once before the expedition. They need to know where everything is without emptying the entire bag in the rain.
- Test the bag — Run the shower over the packed bag for a few minutes. If anything inside is wet, the bag isn’t waterproof enough. (Ours will pass this test every time.)
